Dance>Money

In times of unknowing, following a time of immobility, we choose to initiate the first (un)conference after lockdown, in a series to be followed in 2021 from a global perspective, about dancing and professional survival.

This June, Dance>Money Growing Markets addresses our closer neighbours, the ones allowed to join us. We turn to experienced performing arts professionals from Central, Eastern, South Eastern Europe and Baltic countries, people committed to dance and audiences. Organizers and artists, curators and producers, who have tried to negotiate and navigate the presiding market until the pandemic levelled it to the ground.

Our aim is a call for action for enlarging international cooperation. When the market no longer grows, we grow our own markets.

We invite you to a midsummer in Ljubljana, to explore in unconventional ways some strategies for cooperation. Spending time in green spaces, planting a future full of dance.

10.20

Introduction of the team and guidelines of the (un)conference  10’

10.30

Keynote speech
(Žiga Predan, Dance>Money project lead) 20’

Working together, we need to find methods for strengthening ourselves, to grow and enhance. We have many people we can engage with and vast knowledge we can share. Regions of our choice and reach are marked by different histories and are in different phases of development. Žiga Predan will share his thoughts about their similarities and possibilities for common strategies, models and connections.

11.00

Brainstorming session around 4 topics,
about 15 people each group - 60’

During this session, we work in smaller groups, each focused on one of “fishbowl” topics to be dealt with during the next two days. Dance>Money team members will frame the topic and we will polish our language, to make the topics relevant to our realities and the regions we work in. Feel free to speak your voice, raise your flags, ask your questions. Speak what matters, admit where in the free flow you anchor your interest. Admit where it hurts and we will delve deeper.

12.00

Coffee break

Fishbowl sessions in the yard (or indoors if rain)

What is the “fishbowl” format? Four speakers/initiators sit around a circular table with five chairs, one is empty. Participants sit in a circle around the table and listen to the initial thoughts. Whenever somebody wishes to fill the potentiality, and when the table is “open”, a participant may either sit on the empty chair or replace someone at the table.

All four sessions will be moderated by Chris Torch, Sweden.

12:30

Discussion 1: SOIL // co-production - 60’

In order to break new ground and create nutritious conditions for creative work, we need to forget the little differences that irritate us. When partners collaborate, financing becomes more available, time, space and other resources can be shared. What are the tools and resources we can use to build a strong foundation and foster sustainable co-production in our regions?

Initiate debaters: Zvonimir Dobrović, Croatia (Perforacije, Domino), Špela Trošt, Slovenia (Via negativa, Sploh), Ksenija Djurović, Serbia (Bitef), Mitja Bravhar, Slovenia (Kino Šiška)

13.30

Lunch by the river
Riverside lunch will be provided by the Supercatering team.

14.30

Discussion 2: H2O (water) // international touring - 60’

Water is essential, it is almost all what we are made of. But we need more to thrive. Artists in the regions of our focus need money and better work conditions. This discussion will focus on providing mobility opportunities which vitalise artistic work. Touring outside of our local and national zones is important, both as artistic benchmarking and for providing income. How to accelerate international touring for artists from these regions and in these regions? Not by exchange, but by raising their income. So they do not flee, but float.

Initiate debaters: Gyury Szabo, Hungary (Trafo), Ivana Kalc, Croatia (Periskop), Iva Sveshtarova, Bulgaria (Antistatic, Brainstore project) , Mojca Jug, Slovenia (Mladi levi, Bunker), Assen Assenov, Bulgaria (One foundation) - virtual commentator

15.30

Wrap up session - questions and improvements - 20’

After the talking, we will retreat into silence, to reflect and write down thoughts, criticisms and/or perspectives. These will be then checked by the Dance>Money team, eager to learn from their mistakes. Your suggestions will be shared with other attendees – for a better tomorrow.

16.00

End of Day 1

FRIDAY, 19.6. 2020

9.30

Welcome coffee

10.00

Keynote speech (Annika Üprus) 20’

10.30

Discussion 3: O (oxygen) // shared tools, 60’

Covid-19 contaminated breathing, it will never be the same. But we need each other's air to discover and share the tools that can enable ambitious works, support resilience and help us survive difficulties. You know what I do not know, and you perform that knowledge differently. What do we need to be able to share that knowledge, spaces and other tools, effectively and internationally?

Initiate debaters: Olga Zithluhina, Latvia (Laiks Dejot, Latvian Academy of Culture), Sanja K. Tasić, Serbia (Infant, Hleb), Mojca Kasjak, Slovenia (Moja kreacija), Christina Liata, Greece (Onassis) - virtual commentator

11.30

Coffee break

12.00

Discussion 4: A cultural eco-system // networking - 60’

Informal and sustainable networks for producers and arrangers, especially with a regional focus, are insufficient. We need to focus on net weaving, not working. Process, not entity. Talking to other professionals that share similar conditions, we need to test and adapt our frameworks. Our networks should get formidable, we should collaborate to make our field great again.

Initiate debaters: Annika Üprus, Estonia (SAAL), Gyury Szabo, Hungary (Trafo), Nataša Zavolovšek, Slovenia (Exodos), Gregorsz Reske, Poland (ResKeil, EEPAP) - virtual commentator

13.00

Lunch in the park
Lunch in the park will be provided by the Supercatering team.

14.00

(Un)Reflections & Wrap up session - 120’

We will use the final two hours of (un)conferencing to pull our thoughts together and look forward. Now we separate, but how can we stay together? How to make sure we will miss each other? What is the binder made of?

16.00

End of (un)conference
